The UN Chief in South Sudan, David Sharier has briefed the United Nations Security Council on peace progress in South Sudan last Thursday.
‘This peace agreement is far from perfect. But it is the one that we have in front of us today and we are not going to get another chance at this’ Sharier told the UNSC.
Sharier who expressed optimism said the current peace deal is still holding due to openness and trust measures instilled among all the parties to bring final peace to the country.
He commended efforts of IGAD and the successful role played by Sudan to bring all the parties around the table which negotiated this peace deal.
In his speech, he pointed out four signs of progress which included free movement of the opposition in the government-controlled areas, reduced levels of violence and positive engagement of all the parties in UNMISS activities and finally signs of willingness to return home among the Internally displaced persons.
He said efforts should be increased to keep the momentum and contain the violence in the Central Equatoria, particularly around Yei area.
But according to him, there are fundamental issues yet to be resolved such as the number of the states, the borders issue, the national army and the constitution-making process without which this peace may derail.
