Parties reject Ateny’s extension claims as untrue!
Juba, PR, MP 05 Jan. 2021
News from Juba said Parties to the current Revitalized Peace Agreement refuted claims that they have agreed to extend the transitional period for another two years.
Earlier, Ateny Wek Ateny, Press Secretary in the Office of the President said parties to the peace accord have agreed to extend the transitional period up to 2023 claiming that 36 months aren’t enough for full implementation of the peace process.
However, the government spokesman and Minister of Information Michael Makuei Lueth swiftly rejected it as untrue. Dr Lam Akol Ajawin, leader of the NDM, on the other hand, said he wasn’t aware of such agreement. Also, the Office of First Vice President, Dr Riek Machar's opposition group distanced itself from such claims.
Already, the transitional government had been extended more than twice and yet it still lacks essential components for the government to operate.
Many issues are yet to be sorted out such as the establishment of the transitional assembly, the reunification of forces, the full establishment of state governments, the constitutional making process, and the economic sector reforms.
All have to be in place for final peace to reign in South Sudan.
