Aids on the rise in South Sudan!
Juba, PR, MP 09 August 2019
South Sudan and UN health authorities have revealed an increase in the percentage of aids victims in South Sudan.
The HIV/Aids Commission on Thursday said the current percentage of 2.9% is slightly higher compared to the one of last year.
Out of 250,000 members of solders, 12,500 among them are effectively living with aids according to Yohana Mabor Deng, the National Director for HIV/Aids in the SSPDF.
The Deputy Director of the Commission, Dr Achol Ayom said the increase in the infection rates among the civilians, on the other hand, could be blamed largely on the ongoing conflict which forced many civilians to resort to protection camps. Many among them have made concubine as girlfriends or boyfriends.
The latest records suggest that about 25,000 people are currently under treatment, but there are more people who haven’t come out yet to declare themselves due to the stigma attached.
Both UN and South Sudan Health Commission are working closely to control aids from spreading further by calling them to come forward for voluntary testing and counselling services.
