Five SSPDF face Court Martial in Uganda!
Kampala, Gulu, Amuru, DM, MP 15 June 2019
Armed men believed to be South Sudan People’s Defence Force ‘SSPDF’ have been arrested in Northern Uganda last Friday.
Uganda media said the five South Sudanese men were arrested by the Ugandan People’s Defence Force ‘UPDF’ Fourth Division at Amuru area in Gulu District.
UPDF said South Sudanese crossed the border into Uganda illegally while carrying heavy arms and rounds of ammunition.
Maj. Telesphor Turyamumanya of the 4th Division told media that the five South Sudanese are now being held pending further investigation and eventual court-martial at the Division’s HQ in Uganda.
However, the suspects had earlier abstracted locals from cultivating sugar plantation at 'Atiak' area on the ground that they encroached into South Sudan territory. Sources said.
Residents have been repeatedly accusing South Sudanese of the invading and waylaying and molesting them before looting their foodstuff. This is not the first time South Sudanese soldiers are invading Uganda. Sources remarked.
So far there was no official reaction from South Sudan to confirm or deny the tension between the two countries at the border area.
The African Union, however, gave both countries a deadline to resolve their boundary issues by 2017 but little progress has been made.
