MP Ann Nan Nankabirwa presents lists of Ugandan traders to Finance Minister Salvatore Garang in Juba
Kampala, Juba, PR, MP 27 May 2019
The Minister of Finance, Salvatore Garang approved recently over $252 million to compensate about ’82 plus’ Ugandan companies and traders allegedly to have supplied goods and services to the people of South Sudan.
Ugandan sources said, these companies and traders supplied goods and services between 2008 – 2010, but were not paid their dues because of the ongoing conflict in the country.
The Ugandan parliament, however, has been trying to meet financial its obligation to pay off these traders and businessmen on the understanding that the approved amount by South Sudan’s Minister of Finance, Salvatore Garang will come soon with interest.
South Sudan and Uganda had entered mutual understanding ‘MOU’ earlier in which both parties have agreed that Uganda pays the traders their dues in Ugandan Shilling at home.
Then, the approved amount which still underway for settlement would be considered as a loan to the government of South Sudan.
Both parties, however, have agreed that South Sudan will be paying back the said amount within 10 years at which a six per cent interest rate would be considered after the first year.
