Kiir reverts to the language ‘Tit for tat’

Juba, PR, MP 09 May 2019

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has accused his rival Dr Riak Machar of working to recruit more fighters despite the spirit of the signed peace deal witnessed in the country recently.

"He is now recruiting and this recruitment is not allowed in the agreement and if it is a matter of recruitment, it is not difficult for me to also recruit," he said.

This statement came while launching the ‘Civil Registry at the Department of Nationality, Passport and Immigration yesterday morning in Juba.

Kiir said on his own side, he wanted to delay talks on the remaining sticky issues for another one year after learning that the opposition demanded a six-month extension.

According to him, the six-month extension agreed with the opposition groups in Addis Ababa won’t provide enough time to discuss these outstanding issues.

He argued saying, the reason is rain, which will make the road difficult between the months of May and October. “You cannot move with a car to any area, but if it is a one-year delay, with pending issues, it can be implemented next year,” he said.

Kiir added saying he had the intention to form the transitional government of national unity by 12 pending other issues because any delay would crush people's hopes for peace.

He concluded saying that those who took up arms to wage wars in order to remove him using violence are the ones prolonging his stay on power.
