Real SPLM’ springs up in The Hague!
The Hague, PR, MP 31 August 2019
A new political organization to challenge President Salva Kiir’s political setup in South Sudan has been formed in The Hague on Friday.
The announcement which was made known by the Secretary-General of SSNDA, Emmanuel Ajawin brought together the former Secretary-General of SPLM Party, Pagan Amum, Gen. Paul Malong Awan, Gen.Thomas Cirillo Swaka, Gen Oyay Deng Ajak and Chirino Hiteng including other dissatisfied individuals.
They said the aim of the new opposition group was to claim the historical vision which was hijacked and deviated from its course.
The most prominent among the group is Pagan Amum, the SPLM Former Secretary-General who gave up his role as the head of the political detainees ‘G-10’ last June, told local media that their new organization would be called the ‘Real SPLM’.
“The Real SPLM according to him is a new organisation that would mobilise and reorganise the committed SPLM members as envisioned by the founder, late Dr John Garang de Mabior,”
Mr Amum, however, differed with President Salva Kiir Mayardit over SPLM organisational matters before the conflict could erupt in December 2013.
He said the government of President Salva Kiir has destroyed the historical party which fought for democracy and freedom of South Sudan.
“We want to live in a country where the rule of law is respected…The vision was to build a democratic country and one nation,” he concluded.
He said, his group has the right to claim the moral responsibility to retain the SPLM party’s name. “We decided to retain the SPLM’s name because we struggled to achieve the SPLM program. Also, we have a moral responsibility to return to the SPLM vision that was betrayed by our former comrade Salva Kiir Mayendit,” he said.
“We don’t see any problem in keeping the SPLM’s name because our new organisation is completely different from the party which is now calling itself the ruling party. The party which is in Juba now is not committed to the SPLM program,” he added.
“We will reorganise the membership of the SPLM party that was scattered by Kiir. We will also recruit new members who believe in the SPLM vision as envisaged by our late leader Dr John Garang de Mabior”.
Pagan Amum rebelled against the Sudanese government in 1982 and formed Anyanya two.
His group joined with other rebel groups in 1983 to form the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) under the leadership of the late Dr John Garang.
